WINDY SAGE ACRES

Updated: Apr 28

A Desert Farm, Reimagined

The story of a regenerative poultry farm in Cedar City, Utah

In the high desert valley of Cedar City, Utah, there’s a 20-acre stretch of dusty land where something unexpected is happening. You won’t find endless rows of green or a big red barn. What you will find is a family working with the land—raising chickens and turkeys in a way that respects the animals, the soil, and the challenges that come with farming in the desert.

The ground is dry, the wind is persistent, and water doesn’t come easily. But that hasn’t stopped them.

Instead of trying to force the land into something it’s not, this family leans into what’s already here. Their birds live outdoors in mobile shelters, with fresh pasture always beneath their feet. The coops move regularly, giving the flock clean space to forage while naturally fertilizing the ground behind them.

It’s simple, but powerful. The birds stay healthy, the soil improves, and the land slowly starts to respond.

This is regenerative farming—focused on rebuilding rather than just maintaining. Out here, that means finding ways to hold onto every drop of moisture, using compost instead of chemicals, and letting time and rotation do what machines and sprays often try to force.

There are no shortcuts. The animals aren’t rushed to grow, and nothing is wasted. The chickens and turkeys live the way they were meant to—dust bathing in the sun, pecking at bugs, and roaming freely with shelter always nearby.

It’s not flashy, and it’s definitely not easy, but it’s working. And it’s creating food that’s full of life—because it came from a farm that’s putting life back into the land, one pasture rotation at a time.
